Medical Students

Welcome to the Division of Plastic Surgery at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. We have multiple learning opportunities that are designed to help medical students explore the field of plastic surgery and get to know the faculty and residents in the division. Our in-person rotation is aimed to help give fourth year medical students a sense of what it is like to be a resident in the UC San Diego Residency Program.

Our various courses provide an introductory exposure to plastic and reconstructive surgery for medical students. You will learn how principles of plastic surgery are applied to treating the whole patient. You will discover how plastic surgeons often function as a “last resort” surgical consult to physicians in primary care and many other non-invasive and procedural specialties. Students will learn concepts that can be universally applied to different clinical problems such as wound management. Additionally, medical students will gain insight on how plastic surgeons become the facilitator for a multidisciplinary team of caregivers during complex procedures.

Didactic sessions have been established to acquaint you with research on multiple facets of plastic and reconstructive surgery treatment. Depending on which year on medical school you are in, your participation in patient care provides a basis for integrating knowledge of the basic of plastic surgery, disease pathophysiology, and clinical practices. You will be exposed to both in-patient and out-patient practices. Finally, your experiences in the operating room will facilitate an understanding of the basic plastic surgery techniques and etiquette.

Our courses are designed to offer a sampling of the plastic surgery offerings available through the UC San Diego Medical School, including congenital and trauma craniofacial repair, microsurgery, hand surgery, peripheral nerve repair, burn, limb salvage, wound repair, and many more. Based on the course you are in, you will rotate through various institutions affiliated with the UC San Diego Medical School.

We look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,
