The UC San Diego Plastic Surgery Residency Program offers opportunities for residents to participate in international humanitarian surgical projects with faculty. Opportunities to provide care to underserved populations in Mexico are available through ConnectMed International and at the Hospital Infantil in Tijuana. International telemedicine clinics are held regularly with sites in Guatemala and with the craniofacial team clinic at the Hospital Infantil in Tijuana. Through collaboration with Dr. Alicia Sigler who directs the cleft/craniofacial team in Tijuana we have held cleft surgery jornadas every few months to treat the patients form the clinic. These surgical events are transmitted via live telemedicine videoconference to the UC San Diego campus where faculty members proctor an interactive discussion with trainees and the surgical team and patients in Tijuana. Residents, fellows and students are encouraged to participate in the care of the cleft patients in Tijuana either in person or remotely via the videoconference. Opportunities for international surgical trips to more remote locations may be available under the supervision of Dr. Gosman. Please contact Dr. Gosman if you have any interest in participating in these international humanitarian projects.
